Sedation Dentistry

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, uses medication to help patients relax and remain calm during dental procedures. The medication can be administered in various ways, including inhalation, oral, and intravenous (IV) routes.

Sedation dentistry aims to help patients overcome their fear and anxiety and ensure a comfortable, stress-free experience.

Happy Gas

At Family Dental Practice, we understand that some patients are anxious about dental treatment and find visits frightening or uncomfortable. We offer a simple sedation called Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide, or “Laughing Gas”) to help alleviate stress and discomfort.

Happy gas is a fast-acting and effective sedation that you inhale. You will remain fully conscious but feel relaxed, calm and less anxious. You can still swallow, spit and talk as needed throughout the procedure. It’s one of the safest sedation methods in dentistry, as it can be quickly reversed and requires no downtime.

Happy gas can be used for various dental treatments, from cleaning to fillings, root canals and extractions.

Ask us about Happy Gas if:

  • You feel anxious or tense during dental treatment
  • You have trouble sitting still in the chair
  • You have a fear of needles
  • You find routine dental cleans uncomfortable
  • Your child requires a dental procedure

What to Expect during Sedation with Happy Gas?

The dentist will place a mask over your nose at the beginning of your appointment. First, you will be given oxygen. Then the dentist slowly introduces a Nitrous Oxide blend. You are closely monitored throughout the appointment, and the Happy Gas strength will be adjusted to keep you comfortable. You will still be given a local anaesthetic (if required for your treatment).

Whilst sedated with Happy Gas, some common feelings and sensations are:

  • Floating feeling
  • Calmness
  • Euphoria
  • Feeling lightheaded
  • Minimised pain and discomfort
  • Tingling in fingers or elsewhere in the body
  • Giggling or laughing

At the end of the procedure, we quickly reverse the effects of the gas using oxygen. In a few minutes, you’ll be feeling completely back to normal.

Who is Suitable for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can benefit many patients, including those who experience dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold or require lengthy or complex procedures. It can also be useful for patients with physical limitations, such as back or neck pain, who struggle to sit still for extended periods.

Before administering any medication, your dentist will thoroughly evaluate your medical history and current health status to ensure you are a suitable candidate.

Oral Surgery

Oral surgery refers to any surgical procedure performed on the mouth, teeth, gums, or jaw. Common types of oral surgery include tooth extractions, dental implant placement, gum surgery, and wisdom teeth removal. Oral surgery may be necessary to treat a range of conditions, including tooth decay, gum disease, oral infections, and injuries to the mouth or jaw.

Benefits of Sedation during Oral Surgery

Oral surgery can be complex and sometimes painful, and many patients experience anxiety or fear before and during the procedure. The primary benefit of sedation dentistry is that it helps patients feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. This can be especially important for patients with dental anxiety or phobias, as it can help them overcome their fear and receive the care they need.

Additionally, sedation can make it easier for dentists to perform complex procedures, as patients are more relaxed and cooperative. Other benefits of sedation may include:

  • Reduced gag reflex: Some patients have a sensitive gag reflex, making it difficult to perform certain procedures. Sedation dentistry can help reduce or eliminate the gag reflex, making it easier for dentists to work.
  • Increased pain tolerance: It can help patients tolerate pain more easily, benefiting lengthy or complex procedures.
  • Faster treatment times: When patients are relaxed and cooperative, dental procedures can often be completed more quickly and efficiently, reducing the overall treatment time.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Dental anxiety can be a significant source of stress for many patients. Sedation dentistry can help alleviate this stress and anxiety, leading to a more positive dental experience.

Alternative Options to Sedation Dentistry

While sedation can be a highly effective option for many patients, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Fortunately, other strategies can help patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during dental procedures. These include:

  • Communication: Communicate openly and honestly with your dentist. Tell them about your concerns, and ask questions about the procedure, so you know what to expect.
  • Distraction: Many dental offices offer distraction techniques such as music or television to help patients relax during procedures. You can also bring your music or audiobook to listen to during the procedure.
  • Deep Breathing: Practising deep breathing exercises before and during the procedure can help calm your nerves and reduce anxiety.
  • Local Anaesthesia: For some procedures, local anaesthesia may be sufficient to numb the area and reduce discomfort. This may be a good option for patients with mild to moderate anxiety.

What to Do Before Sedation?

Before your sedation appointment, your dentist will provide specific instructions on what you must do to prepare. These instructions may include the following:

  • Fasting: Depending on the type of sedation you will receive, you may need to fast for several hours prior to your appointment. Your dentist will provide specific instructions on when and what you can eat and drink before your appointment.
  • Medications: It’s important to inform your dentist about any medications you currently take, including over-the-counter and prescription medications. They may advise you to stop taking certain medications before the appointment.
  • Transportation: You cannot drive yourself home after sedation, so it’s important to arrange for someone to accompany you and drive you home.
  • Clothing: You should wear comfortable clothing and avoid wearing jewellery or anything that could interfere with the sedation process.

Can I Have Sedation Dentistry if I’m Pregnant?

In general, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is considered the safest form of sedation during pregnancy. It is rapidly eliminated from the body and does not accumulate in the foetal tissues. However, other forms of sedation, such as oral and IV, may pose a greater risk to the developing foetus and should be avoided if possible.

It is important to consult with both your dentist and obstetrician before undergoing any dental treatment during pregnancy, especially if sedation is involved. They can evaluate your situation and recommend the safest and most appropriate treatment options for you and your baby.
